Jatropha curcus is a drought-resistant perennial, growing well in marginal/poor soil.It is easy to establish, grows relatively quickly and lives, producing seeds for 50years.Jatropha the wonder plant produces seeds with an oil content of 37%. The oil canbe combusted as fuel without being refined. It burns with clear smoke-free flame,tested successfully as fuel for simple diesel engine. The by-products are press cakea good organic fertilizer, oil contains also insecticide.
It is found to be growing in many parts of the country, rugged in nature and cansurvive with minimum inputs and easy to propagate.
Medically it is used for diseases like cancer, piles, snakebite, paralysis, dropsy etc.Jatropha grows wild in many areas of Pakistan and even thrives on infertile soil. Agood crop can be obtained with little effort. Depending on soil quality and rainfall,oil can be extracted from the jatropha nuts after two to five years. The annual nutyield ranges from 0.5 to 12 tons. The kernels consist of oil to about 60 percent.

Carbon dioxide emissions are local, but their effects are global. The USA, China, and India are thelargest producers of carbon dioxide in the world, and if we don't start decreasingemissions and transitioning away from fossil fuels, the repercussions will be feltthroughout the world. We are looked upon as a world leader but if we do not leadby example, we are destined to be followers. It is of the utmost importance thatthis transition starts now, because if emissions are not curbed significantly by 2050,then the tipping point of climate change will be reached. In addition, a transitionaway from fossil fuels is key to not only creating countless new jobs in greenindustries, but also in mitigating the impact of peak oil and decrease the amountof pollutants in our atmosphere. During a time when there are major differencesbetween developed and developing nations as how to mitigate global warming,Project Jatropha aims to demonstrate the commitment of the youth in developedcountries to environmental issues that affect the developing nations as well. This iswhere Project Jatropha comes in. Jatropha curcas is a carbon sink, taking carbondioxide out of the air and putting it into the ground. The bio fuel produced by theseeds provides a clean, alternative source of energy that not only helps reduceemissions, but also is able to be used in diesel engines to power vehicles andirrigation pumps. In addition, by providing an alternative crop to tobacco for ruralfarmers, the burning of large quantities of firewood, which releases large amountsof carbon dioxide, can be reduced. By demonstrating that biofuels can be producedin a sustainable and economical way, Project Jatropha hopes to start a massmovement to mitigate climate change across the entire world.

Smaller Trade Deficit: Rather than importing other countries’ ancientnatural resources, we could be using our own living resources to powerour development and enhance our economies. Instead of looking to theMideast for oil, the world could look to the tropics for biofuels. producingmore biofuels will save foreign exchange and reduce energy expendituresand allow developing countries to put more of their resources into health,education and other services for their neediest citizens.

Economic Growth: Biofuels create new markets for agricultural productsand stimulate rural development because biofuels are generated from crops;they hold enormous potential for farmers. In the near future—especially forthe two-thirds of the people in the developing world who derive their incomesfrom agriculture.
Today, many of these farmers are too small to compete in the global market,especially with the playing field tilted against them through trade distortingagricultural subsidies. They are mostly subsistence farmers who, in a goodyear, produce enough to feed their families, and in a bad year, grow evenpoorer or starve. But biofuels have enormous potential to change thissituation for the better.
At the community level, farmers that produce dedicated energy crops cangrow their incomes and grow their own supply of affordable and reliableenergy.
At the national level, producing more biofuels will generate new industries,new technologies, new jobs and new markets.

Cleaner Air: Biofuels burn more cleanly than gasoline and diesel. Usingbiofuels means producing fewer emissions of carbon monoxide, particulates,and toxic chemicals that cause smog, aggravate respiratory and heartdisease, and contribute to thousands of premature deaths each year.

Less Global Warming: Biofuels contain carbon that was taken out of theatmosphere by plants and trees as they grew. The Fossil fuels are adding
huge amounts of stored carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere, where ittraps the Earth's heat like a heavy blanket and causes the world to warm.Studies show that biodiesel reduces CO2 emissions to a considerable extentand in some cases all most nearly to zero.
